Forget the wanna-bes, those pseudo-purveyors of Caribbean cuisine in town that strive to be something that they’re not. Irie Jamaican Restaurant is the real deal, helmed by one of the most talented cooks in the county, Ms. Eulet King, who hails from Portland Parish, Jamaica. Her small establishment outdoes all pretenders to the throne when it comes to flavor. And her platters, they matter: spicy jerk chicken, curried goat, oxtails, and the Jamaican national dish, ackee and salt fish. Don’t forget the johnnycakes, those addictive fried dumplings we can’t get enough of, or the gooey, candied plantains, which King serves up by the bowlful. Stupendous vittles. Blue-ribbon authentic.

Overall:

I was looking foward to experiencing Jamaican food with my friend but was so dissapointed with Irie Jamaican. We wern't empressed by the outside appearance of this drab restaurant but looks can be misleading so we headed for the door which read "open". The door was not open. We tried several times to get the door open, thinking it was stuck. We started walking back to our car when a woman from the side door yelled at us to go to the front door. We did, and tried the handle again, we still could not get it open. Finely the woman came to the door and opened it. We were not the only ones who could not get in. Five minutes latter, another couple showed up. The lady acted as if she had better things to do,than let customers in. She went to the door "I gotta open the door" in a rude tone. How do they stay in business?
It was so hot inside. No air conditioning and no fans. Very small and had a dirty feel to it. The menu is small and some things over priced for the type of restruant. A fish stew dish was priced at $12.00 along with a couple other dishes priced the same. When I asked if they had anything vegetarian, the young girl behind the counter rudley replied "Fish". I said nother mind. My friend ordered two pita pocket things which he said were good. Besides the poor service, over priced meals, lack of comforts such as air conditioning, they also do not accept credit cards. Cash only. Niether of will return.

I felt the need to comment on Beths review before I give mine. Beth it sounds like you don't get out of this country much. With reviews like that it is no wonder Applebees, Chilis and Fridays seem to be as prevalent as McDonalds across our country these days. Those pita pocket things are called patties (Pitas are from a different part of the world). If you would use a little more attention to detail on the food and entire menu instead of the aeshtics and with a little more experience with different cultures, perhaps next time you might be able to get past the door. Anyway, I didn't care about the looks or the location. I just went to get my favorite dish, Oxtail Stew. It was delicious. The menu is only overpriced if you compare it to other styles of food or some Jamaican restaurants in other states. The curry chicken pattie was one of the best I ever had and I would by a dozen for $24.00 just to let my friends try them out. This could use a little discount in my opinion. I also think the portions of oxtail should be a bit bigger and the red beans and rice could use a little more flavor. And, even though I'm a big fan of debit cards, I will return again (cash in hand) to try some other dishes if not my old favorite.

Overall:

First let me say I am from NY and an area where Jamaica cusine is top notch, so I know excellent Jamaican food. Irie's is not Excellent, it is okay. Now don't get me wrong I've been there a few times always hoping it would be better (and it wasn't)but what options do you have they are the only Jmaican place in town. The problem I have is not the outside facade, I think that is fine or the little tables or even the attitude which if you are from NY where there are a lot of Jamaicans, you are use to that hell I kinda missed it. It is the food it is watered down, doesn't have that kick it is suppose to have the spices need to be doubled r tripled. I have had the curry goat (good) oxtails (weak) and the Brown stew (fair). The portions could be bigger but over all I don't want to spend $37 on okay or fair Jamaican food. My husband and I are pretty good cooks we have decide to make our own. But on a rare occasion, I would go back.

DON'T GO!!

I went to Irie for the first time last week and tried the oxtail with peas and rice and it was HORRIBLE. My family is from the caribbean and I have seen and eaten better than what they served. The rice had no flavor, the brown stew that the oxtail was cooked in was this thick gooey mess. I spent a lot more money on my food than it was worth but I began to feel sick and I had to throw my food away after a few bites.

This restaurant is empty for a reason. If you know what good Jamaican food tastes like then I would not recommend Irie.
