Starting in February 2005, New Times staff writer Paul Rubin got unprecedented access to the Phoenix Police Department's C-32 homicide squad, whose members include veteran Detectives Jack Ballentine and Alex Femenia. Over 11 months, Rubin stood alongside the murder cops at 20 crime scenes. He saw a lot of dead bodies, and he observed the detectives break down a host of suspects back at police headquarters. He was also present for witness interviews and autopsies — literally every aspect of C32's investigations. The result is a series of stories on homicides in Phoenix.
